The Itinerant Illustrator 2014

The 5th International Illustration Research event joined forces with the peer reviewed Journal of Illustration and was hosted by Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore. The symposium this year focused on the praxis of illustration in an expanded field, including histories of local/regional illustrative practices and the traversing of diverse media platforms.

I was a part of the Exhibition Design Team for the symposium. Our tasks ranged from branding, brochures, posters, invitations, space planning and design, exhibit display style, partitions and the organisation of the event.

I, along with 2 of my batchmates were involved in the space planning and designing partitions for the exhibition.

The site for the exhibition was the third floor of our college campus N3. Our main challenge was to convert a college floor with classrooms and open studios into a space for an International Exhibition for 33 exhibiting artists from all over the world.

We took the concept for the space planning from the term 'Itinerant' itself and came up with words like travel, journey, passage, circulation, exploration, transit, movement and navigation.

To display artworks as well as to create partitions in the space, we decided to use bamboo to build these cuboid structures. These bamboo partitions gave a raw look to the entire space and went along well with brick wall.

9 of these partitions were made by a group of 5 of us from the class.

Along with working collectively towards the exhibition, we all had to take up a personal project that could be added to exhibition.

Since this was an International Exhibition with visitors from all over the world, I decided to make stickers on 'Things in and around Bangalore' for laptop covers, almirahs, notebooks etc.
